So there is a post going around right now about how in Plano Texas, there was a sting operation that caught a sex trafficking ring. Some of the people there were first responders and teachers. However if you look at twitter, and of course on this hell site, there are people who are SO EAGER to suck a drag queens no no bits, they had to go out of their way to post some pretty "lovely" things. Now the reason I'm posting this image, rather than just the article is to prove a point.

We have absolutely zero confirmation about what the user William LeGate said here. None. At best he tried to look up some names, and background checks on those listed. However, on the original post by the DFWPD (Dallas Ft. Worth PD) This article is not even cited. And I looked at the article. You know what WAS listed in the "jobs" let's look:

They keep bringing up priests to score points against who they imagine the enemy to be.

Even though, y'know, those caused an international scandal for decades, mostly among Catholics.

And also many conservatives who are concerned about this aren't even Christian.

Also, what sort of ghoulish person looks at this situation and immediately starts looking for ways to sneer at the enemy instead of going something like "thank goodness these monsters got caught!" They can't even pretend they really care.

bitches really be like "public school is a prison" and then turn around and be like "trying to raise ur kid in any other way than sending them to public school means ur a right winger" (ridiculous)

which is it bro. do you want people to be free to choose how to raise their kids outside of the assembly line obedient citizen worker factory or not

max1461

I've not seen this discourse before so I don't know the full context, but: I think kids definitely shouldn't be confined to public schools, but I also think confinement to the single family home is terrible for kids and is one of the primary vectors of their oppression. Teachers are often authoritarian and abusive, but parents are also often authoritarian and abusive, and they have far greater power to harm their children than teachers do. In general parents are the greatest danger to their children, and are as a class the principle group responsible for childrens' oppression (the entire structure of the present society, which treats children as essentially parental property). As bad as the public school system is, schooling outside the home provides a much needed check on parental power.

However, I think schooling as it exists today is also horrifically abusive, and I obviously empathize with parents who see this and don't want their children to have to go through it. As long as those parents are making sure their children have access to those things that schooling should be providing them—a peer group, a place to go outside of their parents' watch, other adults who can recognize abuse that may be happening or can provide the children with things their parents are failing to provide them with—I am absolutely fine with it. But given how things are currently set up, I am deeply hesitant to pursue any political agenda which would in general expand parental power, which the homeschooling movement broadly does.

And I hope it goes without saying that I would jump at the chance to support any policy which doesn't make it a choice between these two IMO very bad options.

scarlet-rosepetals

The problem isn’t that people just, like, secretly love public schools and scoff at any of the perfectly reasonable other options available, it’s that there are no good options. I’ll even run through the options to demonstrate.

Public school: a fucking prison. Authoritarian as shit. Getting worse every day as conservatives lobby to make it a crime to teach kids that slavery happened.

Private school: these are very often religious schools, which from my perspective growing up in the US means Christian schools. I actually went to one of these! It was bad!! And even if you have the perfect shining actually good private school near you somehow, how are you gonna pay for it? It costs money, probably a lot of money.

Homeschooling: like the person above pointed out, makes it really easy to abuse kids without anyone seeing. Also as it gets harder and harder to congregate without spending money it’s going to get harder and harder to give your kid sufficient access to a peer group without shelling out for it. Isolating at best and horrific at worst.

No schooling/alternative schooling/unschooling/etc: even if this didn’t usually manifest as homeschooling but worse because the kid isn’t even learning anything they’re just isolated and having their development fucked up, we do still Live in a Society which means a kid with no recognizable education is gonna have a real hard time existing under capitalism as an adult. They’re almost definitely going to end up extremely dependent on the parents, which means we’ve got another situation that facilitates abuse on our hands.

Anyways it all sucks kids deserve better burn the system to the ground etc etc

oparnoshoshoi

Buncha smoothbrains up on this thread. Just say you advocate for government seizure of all kids and save us all time.

If abusing kids was your concern, guess what? Parents also have access at times other than school time. Meanwhile public school teachers are literally the number one demographic to sexually assault a child (cops are #2).

Abusive parents are gonna be abusive wherever or whenever.

So let's not toss out the baby with the bathwater on this one. And yes, parents have a right to give their kids a religious education if they so choose.

gearboxpraexology

Love the completely non-falsible argumentation of “teachers can be abusive, and parents can also be abusive,” carrying the entire load for homeschooling not being an improvement over public school.

Racists be like “Orcs are obviously black coded look how violent and evil they are” and “goblins are obviously Jewish coded look how greedy and how hooked their noses are”. Shut the fuck small brain I just want to throw dice and kill elves.

angerydome

Not too long ago, I described a non-human character as having lizard traits (as in, actual physical lizard traits) and someone tried to lecture me about how I shouldn’t make this character a Jewish caricature and I had to reply like, “As a Jew, I’m gonna feel free to take full offense at that one.”

kaldicuct

All I can say to that one is "dayum."

himmelheim

Dude I even saw a post going all "Argonians in TES must be Jewish coded"

And like if you see a big bipedal talking lizard in a videogame and your first thought is "must be a Jewish reference" you need to go to therapy.

siryouarebeingmocked

I think that comes from the idea that Lizard People conspiracy theories must be about the Jews, somehow.

themostbeomanintheworld

Because you've never heard about the (kinda) newest hot take from the ultra leftist redditor bowels of r/Sigmarxism (a Warhammer Fantasy/Age of Sigmar/Warhammer 40k leftists "reclaimer form fascists" subreddit)

Basically they had a long thread in which they argued that the fantasy race of the Skaven (a race of subterranean, backstabbing, megalomaniac and sadistic rat people hellbent on conquering the surface world) are actually a Jewish stereotype.

officialfist

Hate that

arcanelanterns

"Caricatures don't exist so i can ignore blatantly racist or antisemitic content without guilt"

Anyways go fuck yourself man

celestial-naiad

You're 17 so like I'll cut you some slack for this cold take. Please at least TRY and read the other responses on this post. Literally a Jewish person above you on here explaining exactly why this presumption that lizard traits are inherently antisemitic is bad. They couldnt even have fun making their own lizard person character without a NON jewish person lecturing them. If you associate lizard traits with jews or barbaric tribes with black people that says more about your own prejudice than it does about the people creating these characters because the overwhelming majority of the time these things have ZERO to do with real life people.

If you think the argonians in Skyrim must be an antisemitic caricature of jewish people YOU are the antisemite for associating lizard traits with jews. Need I say more?

"Caricatures don't exist so i can ignore blatantly racist or antisemitic content without guilt"

You're the only one arguing that it's "blatant", and our point is that those caricatures don't exist in OUR heads - they're in YOURS.

It's a hell of a thing for someone like you to leap from ACTUAL caricatures like Al Jolson in blackface or a Nazi poster about Jewish bankers and actually EXTEND that kind of crap to utterly unrelated pop-culture content.

No one but YOU made that connection.

Imagine someone got accused of rape, and someone doubted them, and someone else went “oh, so you’re saying rape doesn’t exist?”

As someone who had good math grades...

...I don't get it.

darkmanethewanderer

Beecause everyone only ever gets half of what the person before them gets, and mathmatecally you can always cut a number in half again, even with infinite mathemeticians they’ll never actually get to 2 full beers, so by just putting 2 beers out the bartender has fullfilled all the orders going forwards.

1 + .5 = 1.5 +.25 = 1.75 + .125 = 1.875 + .0625 = 1.9375 +  0.03125 = 1.96875

And so on and so on and so on. No matter how many, it’s always going to be just a bit less than 2.

oh yes, because this is what freedom looks like. what this headline does not explain, is that this man did not just turn around and open fire on this family, he invaded their home and killed two women protecting their babies, and an eight-year-old boy.

I thought I’d gotten pretty fucking cynical about shootings in the US. Earlier just today I read about a man who shot a guy who scammed him out of forty bucks, and thought, what an idiot. Because if I started weeping about every shooting that should not have been allowed to happen, I wouldn’t be able to leave the house for fear of getting killed by a guy who needs anger management therapy way more than he needs a weapon. But this takes the fucking cake.

I don’t understand how people can defend this. “second amendment rights.” Does this look like “rights” or “liberty” to anyone?? The right to be terrified literally at all times? The right to constantly be looking over my shoulder, whether at the grocery store or campus or the movie theater or a restaurant? I was once talking to a French exchange student, and she told me that some guy at a club had grabbed her arm or something, and that she shoved him off and told him to get the fuck away. And I was startled because, wasn’t she afraid that he would have a gun? But no, people in other countries aren’t constantly on edge.

The NRA is holding the United States hostage. Why are we letting them?

thomaspaineslessarticulatecousin

And parade goers were murdered when a driver intentionally drove into them. Bad people are going to do bad things whether guns are available or not. All you do when you ban guns is make good people defenseless. That is why crime, violent crime and murder go up when gun control is implemented. I know of only one exception, Australia in the late 90s. If you don’t want to be a victim, then stop being one. Get a gun, learn to use it and defend yourself and those you love. if you don’t want to do that, well I get it, it is unpleasant but reality doesn’t always go the way you want it to. Deal with it.

darkmanethewanderer

The funniest thing about this is that OP also conveniently left out the fact that the shooter in question, Francisco Oropesa, is an illegal migrant who’s been deported 4 different times.

To think if we actually had border security this murderer wouldn’t’ve been allowed in the country at all, and that family would still be alive. But nope, people like OP think closing the border is racist, so we’ve gotta let in murderers like this shooter, regardless of how many times they’ve been kicked out.

Superman is an incredibly kind and tender character. (If he’s not being written that way, then he’s not being written well.) He inspires hope not just through his heroics, but also through his kindness toward other people. That’s his thing. Don’t you DARE call tenderness a “weakness.” Get your toxic masculinity the hell away from me and go read a badly written Batman comic if you want a “tough” male character.

krinsbez

Why on EARTH would someone think Superman being tough and Superman being kind are contradictory?

frasier-crane-style

Is that a Snyder fan telling someone that “you’re wrecking the character, create something new instead of making an interpretation that’s so off-base”?

Because Snyder is the guy who wanted the Greek Gods to all be Kryptonians and the Amazons to be descended from them.

simon-newman

Where's that comic where Superman comforts Billy?

da-boy-o-kultur

I saw that tweet by Gunn and thought “So, like regular Superman?”

Kyle sounds like Lex Luthor who believed that Superman doesn’t have a Civilian identity because such a godlike being would see it as beneath him. Also here you go @simon-newman

Going to be that guy and point out that it was never a set in stone plan for the Gods of olympus to have ben kryptonians. It was just on of the dozens (if not hundreds) of ideas that gets bounced about during worldbuilding during the development of any adaptation. Given how the current popular trend at the time was ‘the gods are aliens’ thanks to the Thor movies at the time, it makes some amount of sensee that when they were brainstorming how they were going to implement the gods into their cinematic universe that they would at least think of an idea like that once.

But yea to thee original post kyle is an idiot.

Story is wild

Little girl was part of a county fair agro-educational program where they raise an animal for a few months and at the end it’s slaughtered. Supposed to teach them about the economics of farming and stuff.

But the little girl loved her goat so much she was crying on the day her goat was supposed to be taken away, so her mom sent the county fair people an email saying “I’ll pay for the goat and any expenses. We’ve had several deaths in the family in the past year, I don’t wanna take away one more thing my little girl loves.” Technically the goat had already been sold at auction, so the mom was on the hook for about $1000, only about $70 of which would have been profit for the county fair.

The county fair people were irate and got law enforcement involved, over this “breach of contract”. They literally got a fucking judge to sign a search warrant, authorizing them to go to this little girl’s house and search every room and every cabinet or box “large enough to contain a small goat”. The sheriff’s deputies seized the goat, and whoever they gave it to immediately slaughtered it, though they were supposed to wait until some kind of agreement had been worked out.

In the county fair’s initial email correspondence with the girl’s mother, they made it clear that they were pissed off because the story of the little girl who loved her goat was circulating on social media making them look bad, and they felt the girl needed to be taught a lesson about keeping your promises or whatever. So they refused the mother’s offer to pay for it, and insisted they get the goat. Even if it meant sending the fucking cops into her house lmao.

It’s worth noting that the girls family contacted the person who won the auction (a government person of Some Sort sorry I forgot who bc I read this article yesterday and am too tired to reread rn), who said “yes, we are fine with not receiving the goat. We are cool with being refunded and seeing the goat go to a place where it won’t be killed” and the fair officials still decided that letting a minor back out of a contract (minors can back out of contract “within a reasonable amount of time” in CA) would teach the wrong lesson.

They sent the police to raid her house and slaughter her goat. To teach her a lesson on keeping her word.

“Our daughter lost three grandparents within the last year, and our family has had so much heartbreak and sadness that I couldn’t bear the thought of the following weeks of sadness after the slaughter of her first livestock animal,” she wrote to Shasta District Fair Chief Executive Melanie Silva.

But Shasta District Fair officials threatened to call police the next day and rebuffed Long’s attempt to find another outcome for Cedar other than it being returned, slaughtered and donated for a barbecue.

"let people enjoy things" is about like. danganronpa or hannibal or something else like that. not the antisemetic wizard game that's going to be funding anti-trans campaigns in the uk.

fierceawakening

I'm totally okay with "hey friend of mine, I'm super uneasy that you play that. This is so upsetting to me that I'm rethinking being friends with you."

I'm less fine with "Hey person who I don't know who might very well have pirated that, I just want you to know that I demand that you Feel Bad."

What does the second thing actually accomplish?

gingerautie

Part of the point of the boycott is reducing jkrs cultural capital, not just her financial capital. She has effectively infinite money, a huge international market who are completely detached from her anti trans activism. When every article on anything HP related has the word "controversial" or "anti-trans" in it that's a blow to her cultural influence in UK and anglophone spaces. We can't cut her income in a way that matters, but we CAN make her something other than nice centre left lady children's author in wider cultural discourse. And a boycott is part of that. It's a statement. We won't touch her stuff, we won't give you money for it and we won't promote it by talking about it or streaming it. Invite her to an event and we won't go, and we won't support your other stuff either. We're going to make it difficult and controversial for you to do stuff with a leading anti trans propagandist.

If you're pirating and playing it don't post about it. Don't encourage other people to play it. Don't talk about it.

Don't expect trans people to do an individual assessment of your personal motivations and financial contributions when you're crossing that line in public either.

I mean yeah it's basically shame and public disapproval as a social control mechanism and it's not nice and it's not kind but it's a fight worth winning

the-dao-of-the-zerg

Okay, I’m trans, and I genuinely don’t get this.

Mars, Nestle, and Hershey are engaged in child slave labor.

I don’t think I even need to start on the evils carried out over oil companies, and therefore any form of driving.

Tons of companies make obscene profits off of all sorts of unethical behavior. Tons of companies make obscene donations to all sorts of unsavory politics.

So given the basic realities of existing in this society, driving to work, buying groceries... I’ve already supported child slavery, massive ecological devastation, and probably financed a death squad or something...

After all that, why is Harry Potter where you draw the line?

Like, you don’t like at your friends with suspicion for eating a candy bar or driving to work, but playing a video game? Why do you draw the line there?

You’ve openly admitted “it’s not nice, and it’s not kind, but it’s a fight worth winning”. What makes this one worthwhile, compared to killing the environment and child slavery?

brazenautomaton

"We have to reduce her cultural capital by shaming unrelated people and it's not nice but we have to win"

the funny thing about Culture War is people don't usually admit they're doing it, but you just did there

Culture War is bad. Don't wage Culture War. Don't wage it even when you are very certain that you're right and the other person is very bad. Don't wage Culture War. It makes the world miserable and, and this is important, never accomplishes your goals.

darkmanethewanderer

The funny thing is that if you’re going after JKR, Hogwarts Legacy is the last place you should be boycotting because its such a small fry.

You want to hurt her? you’ve gotta pick up your shoes and go down to Lego HQ or Universal and picket and protest them for their continued massive licensing fees they’re paying her to use her IP for new sets and for the massive land they’ve got there.

But that requires actually getting up and going out, whereas hogwarts legacy you can boycot from home, in bed in your underwear.

In regards to the backlash over The Last of Us, having prominent gay characters, I think it’s important to emphasize that not just straight people would survive in an apocalypse scenario. In fact, conceptually, homosexuals are more likely to endure. Our lives have taught us pain, coping, redefining ourselves, solitude, and how to mitigate a feeling that the whole world is against you. These are all powerful psychological traits that would give a slight edge to an individual when the whole world crumbles around them.

Gays understand symbols. We know how to encode information and decode situations. We have strong connections because we have earned them. We have endured epidemics, hatred, violence. We have been attacked and killed already, so what does it matter the source? We know how to deal with things the straights can’t even imagine. We understand how to survive.

Glory to the faggots.

Anyway, the social class in a first world country most likely to survive a zombie apocalypse is gonna be rednecks. Or the hick/hillbilly/mountain people equivalent in a european country. Hell, you go deep enough into the woods then Jebediah might go the better part of the year before he has to ride into town to buy a part he can't jury rig before he even realizes somethings up.

After deep rural people, its gonna be rural-but-i-can-get-to-a-city-in-an-hour types, followed by small towns, and I'm gonna break the pattern and say that city folk are probably more likely to survive than suburbans. Urban areas can be made more defensible and the rich neighborhoods will be able to rely on the cops and the poor neighborhoods will have dealt with enough gang violence that as long as these zombies haven't figured out guns it probably wouldn't be too bad, but suburbans have that bad combination of somewhat high populace and poorly defensible location and that's a relatively cushy life while also being relatively far from assistance.

darkmanethewanderer

Also there’s just the fact that it was pretty clear Bill was gay in the game and nobody had an issue with it, people had issue with the fact that the tv show completely skipped over one of the most entertaining parts of the game, and completely changed the messaging of that chapter.
